Communities are evacuated, a major road is stopped, and wildfires are burning close to Jerusalem.
Reuters, JERUSALEM, April 30 As Israel called for international aid to combat the fire, wildfires blazed on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of homes and the closure of a major roadway.
As thick smoke billowed over the nearby hilltops, television images showed people fleeing the flames and abandoning their cars as fires burned along the important Route 1 Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway.
According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, three firefighting aircraft from Italy and Croatia are anticipated to assist in putting out the fire. According to the Foreign Ministry, Israel has also made appeals to Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria.
The military said its search and rescue personnel were supporting the operations, while Israeli media reported that 120 fire and rescue services had sent dozens of teams, planes, and helicopters to try to contain the fires.
According to officials, at least 13 individuals were hurt, and three neighborhoods had to be evacuated. Deaths had not been reported. On Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers, a fire broke out, and numerous celebrations on the eve of the country's Independence Day were canceled, including the major state event that was scheduled to take place in Jerusalem.
